Chichagof Island, the second largest island in Southeast Alaska, covers around 2,100 square miles from seaside estuaries to alpine mountain peaks. It is home to a large population of bears, bald eagles; and five species of salmon. It has over 200 miles of driveable roads, most connected to Hoonah, the island's largest community at almost 900 inhabitants. The roads were designed and built for timber harvest, but they also provide access for fishing, hunting, sightseeing, photography, picnicking, and other outdoor activities. This Island is part of the Tongass National Forest area.
